Description

Rutherford Cross is delighted to be working on a retained basis with Dawnfresh to appoint a Group Finance Manager.

Dawnfresh is one of the UK’s largest producers of fish and seafood.  Headquartered in Uddingston, the company produces for retail and food service, both in the UK and around the world. In addition it is the UK’s largest Trout farmer with over 70% of the UK market.

Dawnfresh owns & manages 7 farming sites as well as 3 specialised production facilities handling fresh chilled, marinated, smoked and other value added lines.  The business provides a complete range of services, from basic fish processing and supply through to the full product development cycle; from identifying opportunities to delivering the finished product.

The company takes great pride in its passion, knowledge and expertise.  While especially renowned for work with trout and salmon, Dawnfresh also creates products using a broad range of species, including mackerel, seabass and herring. The business works with the UK’s largest retailers and food service companies, boasting extensive knowledge of the market both as a supplier, and through producing and developing its own brands.

Following some difficult trading years across the sector, significant financial progress has been made recently. Despite the disposal of a frozen food business, Dawnfresh achieved a record-breaking turnover of £65m last year. The growth in turnover has been achieved through the development of new products supplied to Marks & Spencer. The company has ambitious growth plans for the future not only in the UK but also increasing its market share in North America. Dawnfresh has the backing and is owned by Alastair Salvesen, CBE, an individual of significant personal wealth.

The role will have a number of characteristics including management and statutory reporting responsibilities as well as building effective working relationships with stakeholders and staff management.

It is a highly visible role working closely with the Head of Finance, taking ownership of financial controls and leading the way on technical accounting standards to support the wider finance team. Given the exposure of the post, it is essential that an individual has a strong work ethic, taking responsibility for their duties and a willingness to support the finance department on key objectives. The Group Finance Manager will work closely with their peers, in particular; Operations Finance Business Partner, Commercial Finance Business Partner and the Farming Finance Business Partner. The post-holder must be able to build positive working relationships with these individuals and be willing to challenge when appropriate.

Dawnfresh represents an excellent opportunity for a motivated and conscientious qualified accountant. The CFO and Head of Finance have proven track records for developing recently qualified accountants and supporting their aspirations to advance in their career. To provide a platform for further development the business has rotated the roles of Finance Business Partners to broaden their knowledge and skills. It is likely that the Group Finance Manager will have the chance to undertake one of these roles once they have shown that they have shown that they have outgrown their own position.

The Group Finance Manager is a key role within the business, as they are responsible for all financial controls. Key to success in the post will be managing relationships with multiple stakeholders, and evolving the current financial reporting to provide stronger support to the business. The successful candidate will embrace the challenge of managing a transactional team of 6.
