Rutherford Cross North West practice is delighted to be engaged by Well Pharmacy (part of the Bestway Group) to appoint a Group Tax Manager for their Manchester headquarters. With a strong heritage in the north west and exciting plans for future growth this is an excellent opportunity to operate in a standalone subject matter expert role with wide reaching responsibilities for group tax risk and strategy development.

Well, formerly The Co-operative Pharmacy, is the largest independent pharmacy business and the third largest overall pharmacy chain after Boots UK and Lloyds Pharmacy (except in Wales, where Well is the biggest chain overall) in the United Kingdom. In 2014 Bestway Group bought The Co-operative Pharmacy for £620m and in 2015 re-branded all 780 branches as Well. Well Pharmacy is part of the AstraZeneca supply chain and the company is one of the largest private sector employers in Manchester.

Reporting into the Group Financial Controller the Group Tax Manager will be the primary point of contact between the Group and HMRC and will be responsible for ensuring the accurate preparation and submission of tax returns, tax compliance and tax reporting. This is a hands-on role involving the management of each of the Group’s company's tax affairs including corporate tax, VAT and indirect tax, PAYE and employment tax, R&D tax etc.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Ownership for tax planning across the business and building the tax strategy (in line with Group strategy)
  • Review and amend processes to help drive overall tax reductions in line with the business plan over the medium term
  • Manage and communicate with internal and external audit on all areas of tax
  • Act as the subject matter expert in Finance and to the wider business for all tax related matters. Overseeing the relationship with HR (tax related reward and benefit matters, PAYE & NI submissions, other levies)
  • Perform and ensure the accurate recording of all tax related costs across the business
  • Act as the direct point of contact with HMRC
  • Liaison with external tax advisors for tax planning and advisory work
  • Ensure correct and appropriate preparation and submission of all annual tax returns in line with the Company’s and statutory reporting deadlines
  • Ensure the correct calculation of the Quarterly Instalment Payments, liaising with Group to ensure an appropriate level of Group relief has been taken into account and to ensure all tax payments are made on time
  • Ensure the correct and appropriate recording of VAT within the businesses. Ensure appropriate processes are put in place to ensure VAT is captured at the correct rate. Review the monthly VAT return and ensure the VAT returns are submitted in a timely manner on a monthly basis
  • Ensure accurate recording of capital allowances that can be claimed by the businesses. Liaising with the relevant teams across the businesses within Finance and the wider business to ensure appropriate processes are in place to capture the required information correctly
  • Responsible for the review of the tax and appropriate balance sheet accounts, their preparation, accuracy and accurate resolution on a monthly basis as part of the management accounts process.

Key knowledge and skills required for the role:  

  • Qualified ACA/ACCA/CTA tax professional with experience gained in practice or another in-house tax position
  • Knowledge of direct and indirect taxes with ability to apply knowledge effectively using advisors only where necessary
  • Ability to influence internal and external stakeholders on tax related matters by communicating succinctly to a lay audience
  • Excellent accounting and report writing skills
  • A strong team player who can work independently and collaboratively
