The Donaldson Trust is located in Linlithgow and opened in 2008 having originally been situated in the heart of Edinburgh with the building designed by William Playfair funded with money from the estate of James Donaldson, the Printer.

The #JunX10n service was set up by The Donaldson Trust in October 2016 as a transitions support service for young people aged 14 to 25 with neuro-diversities. The service aims to empower young people to identify goals and ambitions for their future by improving their understanding of their own strengths and wellbeing needs and gaining opportunities to engage in activities that could lead to increased community engagement, further education opportunities, or employment.

 Job Purpose

  • Reporting directly to the Head of Strategy and Resource, the role will be part of an empowered leadership team supporting the Executive Leadership Team
  • Supporting the development and implementation of the 10-year strategic plan, specifically by developing culture, processes and all activities within the Finance and Systems function
  • Overseeing all financial and systems activity and management within the Trust, the role will ensure the beneficial use of all resources and capital to allow the Trust to achieve its strategy and vision for the future

Key Responsibilities

  • Shaping the future by supporting the ongoing development and implementation of the Donaldson Trust’s 10-year strategic plan, working closely with the Head of Strategy and Resource and colleagues at all levels, to achieve the Trust’s vision for the future
  • Lead, develop and manage the Finance and Systems Team in the delivery of effective and efficient financial management services, facilitating and demonstrating a culture where the Trust’s desired behaviours, attitudes, integrity and its unique personality are communicated to, and reflected in, the corresponding everyday work, actions and attitudes of the team
  • Ensure that the Trust’s strategy and vision are articulated, shared and understood at all levels and are translated into agreed objectives and plans in the area of responsibility
  • Provide accurate and timely financial and accounting information and advice to the Head of Strategy and Resource including (but not limited to) monthly, quarterly and year end accounts, cash flow analysis, forecasts, and budgets
  • Create financial budgeting and forecasting models, finance policies and procedures, and develop and implement the Trust’s finance and systems strategy
  • Ensure all accounting activity complies with relevant financial regulations and best practice and monitor all financial transactions
  • Accountable to the internal and external auditors for annual monitoring and as required, deliver on HMRC reporting, and be responsible for all statutory accounts’ preparation, reporting and compliance, in accordance with the SORP and charity regulations.
  • Provide cost and efficiency leadership, reducing the Trust’s costs where possible and undertake cost benefit analysis for financial opportunities on an ongoing basis
  • Lead the Trust’s annual budget process ensuring full involvement of budget holders and the Executive Team
  • Advise and support department leads/budget holders on planning, spending and management of their budget
  • Responsible for payroll activity, sales and purchase invoicing processing and all transactional bank and investment reconciliations
  • Understand and convey to others financial regulation, legislation and developments and how they will impact on the Trust
  • Lead the annual insurance renewal programme ensuring best value and that the appropriate cover is in place at all times
  • Maintain the Trusts Fixed Asset Register, undertaking asset verification and providing regular reports on asset condition and appropriateness of accounting policy
  • Responsible for effective and efficient financial operations including reviewing, maintaining and implementing new systems and processes including accounting and payroll software packages

  • To be responsible for your team systems, data and processes, including implementing, developing and integrating these as required
  • To be responsible for planning, spending and forecasting your team budget
  • To be responsible for all aspects of line management of your team including recruitment, and performance and absence monitoring
  • To assess and manage risk as it relates to your team objectives
  • To undertake organisational training as required, including health and safety, GDPR compliance and Safeguarding
  • Within your areas of responsibility, ensure compliance with all relevant policies and procedures
  • To provide additional management cover as requested when necessary.

Interesting Facts

  • 70% of the Trust is funded by the GAS Grants (GASS) from the Scottish Government
  • #JunX10n was set up in 2016 by the Donaldson Trust as a transition support service to young people. There are plans for New sites to be developed throughout Scotland
  • During the Second World War the Playfair building became the 20th prisoner of war camp in Edinburgh and the school housed both German and Italian prisoners
  • The School provides a high quality integrated education and therapies services underpinned by the principles of Person Centred Planning for Children & Young People aged 5 to 18 with complex additional support needs
