Rutherford Cross is delighted to be working on a retained basis to recruit a Deputy Head of Finance for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

As the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the UK, the organisation has been supporting and representing its members for over 400 years by setting the highest possible standards of health care.

Membership has grown to over 14,000physicians, surgeons, dental professionals, specialists in the field of travel medicine and podiatric medicine across the UK and worldwide. The 2017 Annual Report, states the group’s income of just over £6.1Mm has numerous streams. Membership subscriptions account for 32%, examinations 34%, with the rest split between; letting of college accommodation, investment income, education and grants received.

The Deputy Head of Finance position represents an excellent opportunity for a qualified accountant with strong technical skills, who can take on a wide range of responsibilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for the running of the Finance Team and will ensure that all reporting deadlines are met. In addition, they will develop the financial reporting package, working with a range of stakeholders within the College.

The post-holder will work closely with the Finance Director, providing daily support and deputising when required. This may include attending Board meetings on their behalf.

The purpose of the role is to provide an effective financial and management accounting service for the College with appropriate business systems and controls. The role encompasses a broad range of skills from management accounting, statutory accounting, team management to business partnering. The Deputy Head of Finance will ensure adherence to compliance and corporate governance procedures and will optimise the use of the College’s financial resources. They will take ownership for developing a team of 6 individuals (4.6FTE).

 

The post-holder will support the college’s strategic planning and decision-making. The Deputy Head of Finance will regularly review working practices to ensure the College is making the best possible use of its available resources. In order to do so they will make certain that all monthly, quarterly and annual reporting requirements are met, as well as all statutory and regulatory reporting deadlines.

 

The Deputy Head of Finance will play a central role in the on-going development of robust financial systems and a budgeting process that will deliver relevant, accurate and timely information to assist office bearers and staff in their decision-making responsibilities. This will include, but is not limited to the development of monthly variance analysis for the functional groupings and faculties within the College, cross-referencing with databases of membership, and assisting Unit Heads to prepare budgets and business plans.

The Deputy Head of Finance will support the organisation on key decision-making by:

  • Providing information to the Finance Director and the Chief Executive Officer to ensure they have adequate financial information for decision-making
  • Working with all available information to provide the College with optimum solutions whilst working within all relevant legislation, policies and processes Having the resilience to deal effectively with changing priorities and tight deadlines
  • Contributing to the corporate decision-making processes, while making all relevant decisions about the daily running of the Finance Team
  • Planning the workloads of the Team on a monthly and annual basis

 

Key duties include:

  • Deputising for the Finance Director when required
  • Producing monthly management accounts for the College and for non-regulatory bodies administered by the College, in line with the Finance timetable
  • Production and submission of quarterly VAT returns
  • Ensuring all balance sheet accounts and any other reconciliation required is completed on a monthly basis
  • Supervision of monthly payroll and provide cover for payroll during holiday periods
  • Direct supervision and development of the Finance Team
  • Delivery of statutory financial accounts, ensuring compliance with all appropriate legislation, and liaison with external auditors
  • Assisting in the annual budgeting process
  • Liaising with College bankers, insurance brokers, fund managers, auditors, and external accountants to ensure effective use of external resources and advice and, where required, advising on ways in which the College may become less reliant on external providers
  • Involvement in other College projects and activities as directed by the Finance Director

The position incorporates a range of responsibilities requiring a confident individual with a strong technical background. It is essential that the Deputy Head of Finance has the ability to deal with a wide breadth of duties and is willing to challenge the Senior Management Team when appropriate. Also, the candidate must to be able to manage and develop junior members of the team.

The individual will be CA/ACCA/ACMA qualified and will have gained experience in an industry environment.

A summary of the key candidate requirements are as follows:

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Qualified accountant with appropriate post-qualification experience
  • Experience of statutory reporting and liaising with regulatory bodies
  • First-rate attention to detail
  • Experience of budgeting and monthly management reporting, especially in creating tailored reporting packages
  • Proven ability to build relationships at all levels
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence both internal and external stakeholders
  • A strong team player, with a desire to make a significant contribution to the Finance Department
  • Excellent IT skills including MS office and a good working knowledge of accounting systems
  • Proven experience in line managing a team with a varied skill set

 

 

Salary: £39,000 - £44,619 (depending on experience)

Pension: Will double match employee contribution up to 5%

(i.e. maximum employee 5%, employer 10%)

Holidays: 30 days plus 10 bank holidays

(Days must be kept for office closure at end of December)

Life Cover: Death in service, 3* annual salary

Professional Fees: Fully paid

Working Hours: 9am-5pm
